Richard Manuel is such an interesting character.
What a talent and voice! It’s a shame he didn’t realize that in life the biggest secret is that even when your world is upturned and there is no hope the tide will turn.

I Shall Be Released ~ The Band
I can remember laying on the floor in the “rec” room of our very 50’s style home and listening to this entire album…as this final track faded away I was almost in tears…those kind of happy-sad tears….and thinking what next from these guys…The Band and they’re us too!
Yes the final track from the masterpiece Music From Big Pink, and it’s Richard Manuel’s spine-tingling, lonely tinged rendition of Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” With Rick Danko and Levon Helm harmonizing in the chorus, this is the definitive version in my books! And it more than fills the bill for Theme Thursdays This Is The End, great final tracks of albums from the Flimwell Papers Music Corner. It’s listening to the whole work again that one sees just what a great pick it was for the last song.
Masterpiece

I don’t think there ever was a band that looked less likely to rock you than The Band. Yet they have every bit of soul that you would ever want in a group.

What do you think? The most underrated band of all time?
